FAQ

At Greenfields Therapy Farm, we understand that you may have questions about our therapy services. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help address any concerns you may have. If you don't find the answer you are looking for, please don't hesitate to contact us directly and we will be happy to assist you.

  • What should I wear?
Close-toed shoes or boots required. If clients do not come to the farm with appropriate footwear, the session will be modified and no animal interaction will take place for that session. Dress for the weather Programming runs rain or shine so ensure you check the weather and dress appropriately. We do have access to both sheltered and open air spaces. (Programs will not be running in the event of extreme weather such as thunder and lightning) Helmet (Ages 12 and Under) We require all individuals aged 12 and under to wear a helmet while working with the horses. You are welcome to bring your own (a CSA approved bike helmet is fine), otherwise one will be provided for you.
  • Are Parents/Guardians allowed observe the sessions?
No. Parents will not be able to watch the sessions take place. Parents are asked to leave the farm during the sessions.
  • Can we ride the horses?
No. All sessions with the horses using what is called “ground work”. The clients will interact with the horses with the human feet always on the ground.
  • Do we need a helmet to work around the horse?
All individuals aged 12 and under are required to wear a helmet while working with the horses. You are welcome to bring your own (a CSA approved bike helmet is fine), otherwise one will be provided for you.
  • What is Equine Assisted Therapy?
Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT) is the use of horses to help promote the development of life skills. EAT targets mental health challenges and helps with emotional well-being. Horses have a unique ability to mirror human emotions; providing an opportunity for introspection and understanding. Interactions with horses have been shown to reduce anxiety, and decrease stress levels.
  • Who is Equine Therapy for?
We provide services for children (min. 8 years old), youth, and adults. Equine Therapy benefits those with a broad array of needs, including but not limited to:
  • What can I expect from my sessions?
Intake Session: Begins with a tour of the farm for the potential client and up to two (2) support people. Upon completion of the farm discussion will be held about the client’s goals for therapy. Conversation will also be had about how therapy is provided at Greenfields to ensure realistic expectations are in place for all parties. Equine Assisted Therapy Sessions: Based on the information gathered from the intake session the client will be presented with a treatment plan during their first session. This plan will summarize and outline client goals and the plans recommended by the therapist to achieve those goals. Treatment plans can be modified at any point based on client input and need. Each session will be a bit different due to the nature of working with animals and the recognition that our clients are people with dynamic and ever changing interests.
  • Do I need a diagnosis or referral?
No. You do not need any diagnosis or referral to sign up.
  • Are services covered by benefits?
Many benefit plans do cover equine assisted therapy as we provide service under the supervision of a registered social worker. Coverage will be up to the clients to determine based on your individual benefits.
  • Do you direct bill?
No we do not. All payments must be made via e-transfer to info@greenfieldstherapyfarm.ca at the time of booking and receipts will be issued.
  • Do I need to have experience with horses to come?
No. No previous experience with horses is required. Some clients want to jump right in to spending time with the horses in our herd, others will spend time getting comfortable with the animals and work their way up to working directly with them. Both, and everything in-between, is great! We work with each client’s comfort level.
  • Can I come for a tour?
Unfortunately no. A tour is included for all clients as part of the initial intake. In order to maintain a private and confidential space we are not able to provide tours at this time.
  • Can I bring my pet or service animal with me?
No. As we are located on a working farm, we must ensure biosecurity and safety at all times and can not permit outside animals on the farm.
